Digital Immigration Status (eVisa)

If you have been granted a digital immigration status (eVisa) by UKVI, this page provides you with information on how to provide evidence when required and how to fix any problems with your visa.

Why has my visa been granted digitally?

An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK. You need to register for a UKVI account to view and share relevant information about your status securely with third parties, such as employers or landlords.

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is developing an all-digital immigration system to be in action from 2025 onwards.

You will be granted digital visa permission if:

  • You are an EU/EEA/Swiss national; or

  • You are a non-visa national and you have made an application from inside the UK after 31 December 2021

Information about the ID check app

If your country is not on the UKVI list of visa nationals, you are a 'non-visa national'.

If you are an EU/EEA/ Swiss national who has been granted pre-settled/settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you will also have been granted a Digital Immigration Status.

This means we are replacing physical documents with an online record of your immigration status. This is known as an eVisa.

Where is my Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)?

You will not receive a BRP or any physical documentation for your visa. You will instead receive an email from UKVI providing details of your immigration permission. The email will detail your visa start and end dates, the conditions of your immigration permission (what you can and cannot do whilst in the UK).

Visa nationals who apply for a visa from the UK using the ID check app will receive a digital immigration status as well as a BRP.

How do I travel with a digital immigration status?

To enter the UK border, you will only be required to carry the passport you used to apply for your digital status visa. UK border officers will be able to access your digital status via their systems should they need to.

You’ll be able to use an eVisa to travel to the UK – UK visa holders will not need to carry a physical document in the future from 2025, except for a current passport, which must be registered (up-to-date) to their online UKVI account.

As this new digital system is in transition until 2025, please remember to still carry with you the valid physical document (i.e. BRP), if you were issued one.

What if there is an error with my digital immigration status?

You should make sure  all details are correct, including your permission end date. If you spot any errors concerning your personal details, you will need to visit the View and prove web page to report them.

Updating your online immigration status

You will need to update your online status if:

  • you renew or replace the identity document you used to apply

  • you change your name

  • you change your address, phone number or email address; your contact details need to be up to date so you can view or share your status

You can add or change your identity document using your UKVI account. You might be asked to send your passport to UKVI.

It will be a number of weeks before you can log in with your new identity document details. You should make sure you keep the details of your old one until then.

When you add a new identity document to your online status, you’ll need to sign in using that identity document in the future.

Don’t worry if you can’t see your old identity document on your account. It’s still there, but the system might only show the most recent one you’ve added
