2021 Graduations - more information
We regret that graduation ceremonies in summer and winter 2021 will not be running due to Covid-19.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the continued restrictions around holding large scale events, the University has taken the difficult decision to cancel all in-person graduation ceremonies in 2021. This will impact our summer and winter graduations this year.
Graduations are a highlight of our year and I realise how disappointing this news will be for you. The awarding of your degree is a significant milestone and while we may not be able to celebrate in-person in 2021, you will be invited to celebrate your achievement virtually by joining one of our online celebrations. Joining our virtual ceremony enables you and your supporters to celebrate your achievement at the end of your studies. You will be invited to an in-person celebration when we are able to resume these in line with Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance.
Why we have taken this decision now
The health and safety of our students, staff and visitors remains our priority at all times. Current Scottish Government restrictions prohibit large gatherings of any kind and limit travel to ‘essential’ only. Even when Edinburgh moves out of protection Level 4, it is highly likely that we will be living with some form of physical distancing measures and travel restrictions throughout 2021.
We have considered alternative smaller-scale arrangements over the summer (both indoor and outdoor), but unfortunately with the uncertainty around the level of Covid-19 restrictions that may still be in place throughout 2021, it is not feasible to plan multiple events for such large numbers of graduands and their supporters. We have taken this decision as far in advance as possible to enable you and your supporters certainty around our plans and to avoid the need for last-minute cancellations and future disappointment.
Awarding of degrees
Degrees will be conferred by the relevant Board of Examiners and the result communicated to you via MyEd. Once your award has been confirmed, you can immediately access your academic statement, which will evidence your degree has been awarded, in MyEd at MyEd --> Accounts --> My Student Record --> Documents.
Receiving your degree certificate
Your degree certificate will be printed and posted to your home address by the end of August for summer graduates and by the end of December for winter graduates.
The name that will appear on your degree certificate is your full name as it appears on your student record. The name on your degree certificate should match your passport or birth certificate. If the name on your record is not correct, please let us know what changes are needed via this online form.
Our virtual celebrations offer messages of congratulations from senior members of the University community and from the graduating cohort. In 2020 this included the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Vice-Principal: Students and Heads of School. You can participate by uploading a short video clip. Dates for our virtual ceremonies will be posted here by the end of March for summer graduates.

When it is safe to do so, we will invite you to celebrate your achievement with us. How and when events will take place in the future is dependent on a number of factors, especially Scottish Government guidance. Once the situation is clearer, we will share plans with you.
