We had looked forward to being able to welcome you back to Edinburgh to celebrate your achievements in 2021.
However, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the continued restrictions around holding large scale events, the University has taken the difficult decision to cancel all in-person graduation ceremonies in 2021.
We have examined all options to avoid this, but due to the current Covid-19 social distancing measures, our graduation venue - the McEwan Hall – which usually has a capacity of 2000, can only hold around 130 attendees.
Large indoor celebrations are still not legally permitted, making the summer ceremonies impossible to arrange. We have looked at how we might keep the winter ceremonies in place given the tremendous progress with vaccination and virus suppression. However, while we hope for progress in returning to a normal life, winter will be a period of particular caution in suppressing Covid-19.
In a year full of decisions we wished we never had to take, cancelling the graduation ceremonies is among the toughest for the University.
How and when events will take place in the future is dependent on a number of factors, especially Scottish Government guidance, but please be assured when it is safe to do so, we will invite you to celebrate your achievement with us at an in-person event.
What format that celebration can take is something we are working on and are committed to delivering. We are considering all options and will make sure we find some way to keep your connection to Edinburgh vivid and alive, something we hope you will do across all of your life.
