Biology students create an anti-plagiarism video
A video that aims to help students avoid plagiarism and to reduce plagiarism concern was co-created by staff and students, and is now widely used across the University and beyond.
Following focus groups with 21 biology students, key student misconceptions and concerns were identified around the issue of good scholarship and plagiarism avoidance. A plot and narrative was then agreed using padlets to share ideas, and the students themselves drew and narrated the video under the guidance of Dr Cathy Shields and project leader Dr Heather McQueen.
The video “In Your Own Words” is freely available on YouTube and is regularly posted on relevant Facebook groups by class reps from across the University and elsewhere. The project was awarded an honorable mention (UK academic integrity award) in the Turnitin 2015 Global Innovation Awards.
