Edinburgh retain third in the UK for BUCS

Universities from around the UK gathered together at the University of Hertfordshire on Thursday 13 July to celebrate a year of incredible performances at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Awards.

The University of Edinburgh were officially announced as 3rd in the overall BUCS league for 2016-17.

This year has been a phenomenal year for Sport at Edinburgh as student-athletes across 106 team and individual sports rallied together to earn 4,302.50 BUCS points and a place in the top 3 for the third consecutive year.

Four clubs (Archery – 174, Karate 109, Orienteering – 96, Rifle 84) topped the overall BUCS point rankings for their sport this year, whilst 19 clubs became BUCS team champions and 47 student-athletes were crowned BUCS individual champions.

To finish 3rd in the BUCS ranking for 16-17 is a phenomenal achievement, and is credit to the amazing students at the university and the world class coaches who support them.

The pioneering Performance Sports Programme, which was started in 2008, is reaping rewards with an exceptional number of points coming from those within our Team or Individual Performance Programmes.

We’ll not rest on our laurels though, with others keen to close the gap we’ll be doing everything we can to stay in front of the pack in 2017-18 and close in on the top 2.

Ross SimpsonSports Programme Manager

It’s been another fantastic year for sport at the University of Edinburgh.  Following last years 3rd place finish the aim was to seccure this position, we have managed this and secured a record number of BUCS Points.

Finishing 3rd in BUCS required all clubs to perform throughout the whole year and it’s great to see 9 non 1st team teams gaining valuable points and winning promotion in their respective leagues.

A massive thank you to all the athletes, committees, coaches, staff and volunteers for their contributions this year!
