Peffermill playing fields

The University of Edinburgh's Peffermill playing fields boasts some of the finest sports pitches in Scotland.

Located only two and a half miles from the city centre and incorporating the National Hockey Academy, the 27 acre Peffermill site offers a hugely impressive array of training and competition facilities for everybody to enjoy.

Facilities include; two floodlit water-based artificial pitches (internationally accredited), 3G football/rugby pitch (FIFA 1 star and IRB 22 accredited), three five-a-side pitches (3G surface), 10 grass pitches, Two cricket squares, a 100 metre synthetic training track and changing facilities in three pavilions. We also offer conference and meeting facilities, a Bar and lounge area and on-site parking for 160 cars and six coaches.

The facilities at Peffermill are open to all, from the casual user to the international athlete with users from a variety of sectors including the University community, local clubs, corporate organisations, schools and national governing bodies of sport.

Our new 3G pitch (3G2) and training triangle (3G3) are now open at Peffermill.

3G pitch 1

Opened in September 2012, our versatile, multi-sport 3G (or third generation) pitch caters for a range of sports including football, rugby and recreational games/events.

Grass pitches for football and rugby

Peffermill's natural turf pitches are acknowledged as being amongst the best in the East of Scotland and are used for a wide variety of sports including football and rugby.


Peffermill is home to University men's and women's lacrosse clubs as well as a local community club, and is a training and competition venue for Lacrosse Scotland.


Peffermill offers one grass shinty pitch for use by University mens' and womens' shinty clubs during the winter season.


During the summer season, Peffermill has two cricket squares - one grass, one artificial surface - for use by the University and community.

Sprint track

Peffermill provides a 100 metre, nine-lane floodlit synthetic porous polymeric training track.


Peffermill has a designated and marked area for archery practice during the summer.
