Ben Helm Scholarship
The Ben Helm scholarship is available to members of the Edinburgh University Boat Club who show ability and potential for national representation.
Ben was a silver medallist in 1995 World Rowing Championships Lightweight Men’s 8 and participant in the Men’s Lightweight 4- at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, as well as Chairman of the British Championships Race Committee 2018.
Ben learned to row at George Heriot's. While at University, he was Equipment Officer and Honorary Secretary, a position that had the dubious honour of sorting out the fleet after the trailer crash in 1984. He holds four international caps: Worlds 1993, 1994, 1995, and Olympics 1996, with a World Silver in 1995. He is currently the Vice President of the London Rowing Club, holds numerous other committee roles for various events, is a FISA umpire, and a Steward of HRR.
The Ben Helm Scholarship is open to individuals who are:
- Are matriculated students and rowers for the University of Edinburgh;
- Are members in good standing of the Boat Club (i.e. they do not have any outstanding debts to the Boat Club);
- Demonstrate the ability and potential to compete at national or international level in the sport of rowing (this will be determined by the Head of Rowing at the University of Edinburgh);
- Have personal or financial circumstances that otherwise might inhibit that potential to be realised.
The value of the bursary will be £500 per annum.
This year's recipient is Jane Hardie.
