Students Run Away with Cross Country Victory

Last weekend students Mhairi MacLennan and Steph Pennycook dominated the Lindsays National Cross Country Championships in Falkirk’s Callendar Park.

MacLennan, who recently had her GB debut at Euro Cross is Slovakia, won her first national title of her career an outstanding achievement.

To win the Scottish National Cross-Country title culminates what has been, for myself and my coach, a dream season. Callendar Park is a race venue offering everything cross county should have; hills, mud, twists, long gruelling stretches and an amazing supporting crown. Sprinting down the home straight I actualised a dream I’ve had since I first competed there at age 12

With Steph Pennycook coming in second to claim the silver, it was a double win for the University in the senior race.

Really pleased with my race but it was made even better seeing all my Edinburgh Uni team mates dominating. Mhairi and I were 1-2 in the senior race and the U20 girls (Anna MacFadyen, Laura Stark and Naomi Lang) were 1-2-3 in the junior girls race. So impressive to see so much green on the podium.

Overall, the event marks an exceptional start to 2018 for the University’s Hare & Hounds running club.
