Free swimming lessons for disadvantaged children and young people

The Edinburgh University Community Grant Scheme has supported Evolution Swim School CIC to provide free swimming lessons to socially and economically disadvantaged children and young people.

Evolution Swim School was set up by the University of Edinburgh Alumni and Commonwealth Games Medallist Kieran McGuckin.  Thanks to the community grant the swim school provides weekly swimming lessons at St Leonard’s Land swimming pool to over 20 children each week. Along with weekly lessons they will be providing intense summer camps where children will attend lessons Monday to Friday over a 2 week period.  The swimming lessons not only teach a life skill but also help with physical, emotional and social development. Thanks to the University for providing the funds to make this programme possible.

Learning to swim is an essential life skill that is necessary for everyone growing up and could one day save your life. Unfortunately, learn to swim is not accessible to everyone due to situations that they are sometimes out of control of. We are thankful of the support that we have been given from the University of Edinburgh to be able to provide free lessons to socially and economically deprived children and young people(CYP) in the areas that we operate [CYP that live in Edinburgh City]. Learning to swim not only provides CYP with the knowledge to learn this life skill but also social and physical development. Thank you for the continued support and we look forward to working with you at the University in brining free swimming lessons at St Leonards Land swimming pool.
