BUCS Swim Success

Our Performance Swim Team is celebrating a slew of wins at the BUCS Shortcourse Championship in Sheffield last weekend.

30 swimmers from the University headed down and competed with distinction, finishing third overall in points and winning 20+ medals over the weekend.

Two of the outstanding female competitors over the weekend were second year medical student Kathryn Greenslade and second year Business Management student Lucy Hope. They claimed first and second place in the 200m freestyle, with gold medallist Greenslade creating a new Welsh and BUCS record, clocking in at one minute 54 seconds – ranking her the fourth fastest in Europe at the moment.

Hope’s time of one minute 55 seconds with a new personal best and then went on to set a new BUCS record in the 50m backstroke with 27.0 seconds. Likewise, Greenslade swam to victory in the 200m backstroke, again smashing Welsh and BUCS records with a time of two minutes five seconds.

Successes in team events and for individuals including Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Corrie Scott, David Cumberlidge and Daniel Lim, among others, also followed. However, it is worth noting in particular one last achievement of Hope’s, who broke five-time Allison Shepard’s 2003 Scottish record in a time of 53.3 seconds in the 100m free event.

The team now looks forward to the rest of the season having secured these early and prestigious victories.
