Another Varsity Victory for Edinburgh

It was a double victory for The University of Edinburgh at the Royal Bank of Scotland Scottish Varsity Matches 2018, with both the men and women managing to retain the trophies for a second consecutive year.

The sun was out to welcome the crowd of 9,687 at BT Murrayfield on Saturday 22 September to continue the ancient rivalry between The University of Edinburgh and The University of St Andrews.

Women’s match

Full-time: The University of Edinburgh 49-0 The University of St Andrews

Edinburgh’s Rachel Law set the tone by scoring the first try within minutes of the game commencing. The team continued to lead with both Evie Gallagher and Sally Stott scoring a hat trick to secure the victory over St Andrews.

The Keri Holdsworth Player of the Match: Lucy Winter (University of Edinburgh Women)

The Keri Holdsworth award is in honour of Keri, a Scotland Women’s international, who worked at the University of Edinburgh and did a lot of work with the sports teams here in her role as a physiotherapist. She passed away in a car accident aged 36.

Men’s match

Full-time: The University of Edinburgh 26-15 The University of St Andrews

Edinburgh took the lead in the 15th minute when winger Harry Hitchens burst through the defence to score. Edinburgh were then reduced to 14 men in the 21st minute when Max Young was given a yellow card. However they still powered through to win the match.

The Steven Sims Man of the Match Award: Harry Ryan.

The Steven Sims award is in honour of Steven, who was the heartbeat of the University of St Andrews RFC during his time at the club in which he filled committee roles of Secretary, Treasurer, Club Captain and, in his final year, first XV Captain.

Steven passed away unexpectedly after taking ill and going for a check-up at hospital in 2012, aged 23. He died of a rare blood condition called ITP.
