Big Dig Aftercare

Active Lives are looking for volunteers to help with the aftercare of our newly planted trees at Easter Bush

This event follows on from our amazing Big Dig venture.  In 2021 and 2022 we successfully planted over 1000 trees at our stunning Easter Bush campus. We are looking for people to help us with the re-guarding, re-soiling and weeding in order for all our hard work to flourish and grow.

Once your trees are in the ground it’s important to care for them to help them thrive, particularly in the first few years.

What we need to do

  • Weeding is the most essential step in giving your trees the right start. Keeping a 1 metre diameter around the tree clear of weeds and grass for the first two to three years will reduce competition for moisture and nutrients. You can suppress weeds with mulch, such as bark chips or straw bales.
  • Strong winds can blow trees over, so ensure your guards, canes or stakes are upright and pushed firmly into the soil. Pull up any grass growing inside the guard and carefully replace the guard.

Our own well-being

Studies show that being outside and close to nature really has a positive effect on our physical and mental well-being. This events ticks every box in our 5 Ways of Well-being:

  1. Connect
  2. Be active
  3. Take note
  4. Give
  5. Keep learning
