Sport & Exercise, at the University of Edinburgh, are an approved YMCA Centre and deliver a variety of instructor courses. We are pleased to announce that we are now teaching the new YMCA Level 2 CIMSPA endorsed level 2 certification in gym instructing.
This course has been developed to meet the latest fitness industry standards. It is accredited by both REPS and CIMSPA and is internationally recognised.
- How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments.
- How to program safe and effective exercise for a range of clients.
- How to communicate with and motivate clients.
- How to plan a gym-based exercise program using cardiovascular equipment, fixed and free weights and bodyweight exercises.
- How to effectively deliver one to one gym-based sessions, consultation and group inductions.
Format & assessment
This course is tutor-led and delivered over four full days (9am to 5pm). Following registration, you will be given access to digital manuals and Anatomy & Physiology e-learning. These feature state of the art, highly detailed imagery from Primal Pictures, the world’s leading creator of complete and medically accurate models of the human anatomy.
COVID-19 CHANGES - Teaching will be delivered using a blend of digital and face to face. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students therefore assessments will take place at our Easter Bush Gym where we can have sole use of the facilities.
Assessment involves 7 elements including a theory assessment, on course formative instructing and a summative practical instructing assessment plus workbooks and other written course work.
The underpinning knowledge for all level 2 courses is the mandatory theory module which is to be completed as distance learning. Following registration, the course director will provide you with a manual. Begin to read and revise.
Some additional theory tutorials can be provided for students without a background in anatomy and physiology.
The theory assessment is 1 x 45-minute multiple-choice paper (30 questions): Applied anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness instructors. (23 May 2021 0915)
You will be practically assessed for this course delivering one to one exercise consultation (approximately 15 minutes) and a gym instructing session (approximately 45 minutes).
