The review, led by Dr Javed Khan OBE, presents a series of recommendations to Government to support its ambitions to be smokefree by 2030. 09 June 2022 Published today, a new report by Dr Javed Khan calls for the Government to urgently invest an additional £125 million per year for tobacco control to achieve its smokefree 2030 ambition. The report details 15 far-reaching recommendations to make smoking obsolete. SPECTRUM response to the report SPECTRUM welcomes this independent review into action needed to achieve a smokefree society in England. We particularly welcome the scale of ambition contained in the review, making clear that radical but achievable interventions are needed. The report recognises that the health burden caused by tobacco disproportionately affects those living with a current mental health condition and people in our most deprived communities, and that we must focus our efforts on reducing smoking in these groups as a priority. We thank Javed Khan for leading this important work. In doing so he was advised by Professor John Britton, a SPECTRUM member, and the report draws on studies led by academics and partners across our Consortium. SPECTRUM will continue to work with policy and practice colleagues who are now considering the recommendations, and we will play our part in providing data and evidence to inform and evaluate those that are implemented.
