Science on a Summer’s Evening 2015

The College of Science and Engineering presents Science on a Summer’s Evening, an evening celebration of two distinctive research areas including public lectures, displays and interactive activities, as well as live music from the Science Ceilidh Band

Science on a Summer’s Evening is the closing event for the Evenings of Enlightenment, a public lecture series running in May and June 2015.

Saving tomorrow's memories

Welcome to a world where lasers probe the heart of individual molecules, and where events happen in a millionth of a nanosecond.

Dr Olof Johansson’s talk describes some of today’s innovative research in material science. In particular, we focus on the use of extremely short laser pulses to control magnetic materials, the basic components in information storage devices.

Find out how society will be influenced by novel ‘smart’ materials, and how new developments will help to solve the problem of storing the huge amounts of information we will generate in all areas of our lives.

The data revolution in science

Our society will be transformed through our ability to gather, store, process, and integrate vast quantities of information.

Prof Dave Robertson will explain how large-scale research projects – such as the Large Hadron Collider, or the UK Biobank  are being joined by novel data-gathering approaches with the active participation of millions of people, from areas as diverse as galaxy mapping to natural disaster response systems. We are developing new ways of thinking about data.

These new forms of data management promise to open up exciting areas of research and, as a consequence, new challenges for research priorities and ethics.

Tickets

The event is free but ticketed.

Please note: The event takes place on Wednesday 10th June 2015; 6-8:30pm (Doors open at 5:30pm).
