The Roslin Institute, incorporated within the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, occupies a purpose-built research facility (>550 staff/students) with “state of the art” labs, imaging and animal facilities. Roslin is an ‘interdisciplinary institute’ where basic science, translational research and clinical application work together across broad thematic areas. These sit within the BBSRC Institute Strategic Programmes framework, focussing on animal health and welfare, food security and the application of basic animal sciences in human and veterinary medicine and the livestock industry.

The Roslin Institute co-ordinates a number of PhD and MSc by Research programmes (MScR) reflecting the combined research areas of the Institute and R(D)SVS. Opportunities exist to study on a full-time or part-time basis.  At present, we have approximately 180 post-graduate students.

When fully funded opportunities become available for PhD and MScR study these will be advertised on our studentships page. However, enquiries and applications (with or without funding) are welcomed year-round. Further information on the application process can be found through the links below. Alternatively, please direct questions to RDSVS.PGR.Admin@ed.ac.uk.

We advise that prospective students make contact with potential supervisors prior to starting the application process. Details of prospective supervisors and their general research interests are available on our research staff list. Please note that in addition to the standard tuition fees additional programme costs may also be requested at the supervisors’ discretion. These are dependent on the scope of the agreed research project. Applicants will be assessed on the University of Edinburgh entry requirements for postgraduate study (a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent, evidence of English language ability, provision of two valid references) and formally interviewed for a place on these courses.

The University of Edinburgh webpage for new postgraduate students gives links with full details on many aspects of starting your studies in Edinburgh (e.g. accommodation links) and can be accessed at:
