Samuel started his MScR with Professor Ross Fitzgerald in September 2019 at the Roslin Institute with the aim of elucidating the role of staphylococcal prophages in host-specific adaptation. He is a molecular microbiologist that completed his undergraduate study at the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) in Biochemistry. For his undergraduate thesis he focused on understanding the effects of antibiotics in the transfer dynamics of site-specific integrative conjugative elements in Enterococcus faecalis (DrTeresa Coque group, Ramón y Cajal Health Research Center, Madrid).
He is pursuing a career in Microbiology, aiming to cover the diagnosis of infectious diseases from the Molecular Biology all the way to the patient. During his career he has also done several research internships. He studied the role of Peroxide stress Regulators in the oxidative-stress and antibiotic-stress survival of Leptospira interrogans at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, supervised by Dr Nadia Benaroudj. He was also working on the development of a new serodiagnostic tool for Leishmania infantum infection using quimera proteins with Dr Manuel Soto (Severo Ochoa Center for Molecular Biology, Madrid). Previously, he did research on immunometabolism at the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) as well (Dr Salvador Iborra supervising, Universidad Complutense, Madrid).
Samuel is a member of the coordination board of the Young Researchers of the Spanish Society for Microbiology (JISEM), frequently collaborating with the journal of this Society and leading the audio-visual communication team. He also has been involved in some public engagement projects as the Small World Initiative (SWI) and others.
Samuel loves to play and compose his own music, as well as going hiking in his free time.
