How have you grown during your time working in Edinburgh Research Office?

My name is Karolina Borkowska-Szczurak and I am a Research Grants Administrator. I joined ERO in 2019 as a Research Office Administrator. I loved that job and ERO’s positive work environment. I finished my Masters in finance and I knew my heart belonged to this sector. ERO management opened the door for me and encouraged me to learn the necessary skills to move to my current role. I started job shadowing in the Research Grants department of ERO during the summer of 2021, and at the end of the year, I applied for my current position. I like to be a specialist in the role I am doing and ERO has given me the opportunity to develop my career. The steps I’ve made makes me feel very satisfied with my current position and more confident in my job-related skills. The benefit of staying within same organisation is knowing the people in the office, which reduced the potential stress of moving to a new place. Working in ERO has given me the opportunity to meet and work with amazing people and I have high work satisfaction. I have been given the support and necessary training to fulfil my potential and I know that I still can grow in ERO. There are plenty of opportunities to apply for new positions in ERO and make dreams come true!

What I enjoy the most about working at Edinburgh Research Office is the sense of community. Everybody is keen to support each other, and not just within their own team. Edinburgh Research Office brings together a variety of knowledge, experiences and skills that make it a great place to work.

There is a good sense of community, as every member of the ERO team is very friendly and supportive. Working in a team that provides support to researchers towards worldwide impactful work gives me a great sense of fulfilment.

What learning and development opportunities are available in Edinburgh Research Office?

There are a lot of really great training opportunities available throughout the University and within ERO we are actively encouraged to think about our development and seek out opportunities.  We are also supported in taking on additional training and courses relevant to our roles and career goals. I really value working within a team that understands and recognises the importance of professional development, and really tries to equip us with everything we need to succeed in our careers. I feel as though my knowledge and skills, and confidence in my abilities, have come a long way since I started working in ERO two years ago!”
