Make a freedom of information request
How to make a freedom of information request for information held by the University of Edinburgh
The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 gives you the right to request any recorded information held by the University, for example minutes of meetings, records of expenditure, and research reports.
The Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 give you the right to request environmental information held by the University, such as environmental research, information on emissions, or policies on environmental topics.
This page provides you with information about making a freedom of information or environmental information request including details of the timeframe by which you should expect a response.
Is the information you are seeking already available?
Before making a request, save time by checking whether the information is already available. This website includes our index of information we proactively publish under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. You can also search the website by using the search box in the top right corner.
Are you interested in admissions information and statistics?
If you are an applicant, or considering applying to study at the University, you may find it more helpful to contact our Admissions Team to ask for relevant admission statistics and information about entry requirements and selection. You are also likely to get a quicker response to your enquiry. The Admissions Team can provide advice and guidance about the admissions process and what you need to do to maximise your chances of making a successful application. You may also find our published admissions statistics helpful.
Making a request
To assist with processing your request as quickly as possible, please provide as much detail as you can about the information you would like.
To make your request for information contact the Records Management Section, providing your full name, contact details and describing the information you want.
When we communicate with you about your request, our emails may come from the email email@example.com on behalf of firstname.lastname@example.org. This is because of the case management system we use. More information is available through our request handling privacy notice.
Information requests made under the Scottish Freedom of Information Act and the Scottish Environmental Information Regulations must be processed within a maximum of 20 working days, not including weekends or bank holidays.
The 20 working days starts when the University receives your request and ends when it sends the information out. This 'time clock' stops if we have to communicate with you about your request, for example if we have to ask you to clarify your request or notify you that a fee is payable. It restarts when we hear back from you and receive any fees payable.
On some occasions, the University may ask you to pay a fee when we respond to a freedom of information request. Where this is the case we will write to you in advance setting out the fee and how we have calculated it. Pleasee see our charging information for more details.
If your request falls under the Environmental Information Regulations the way we calculate charges is different. Please see our charging policy for information.
