Background

Róisín completed her undergraduate degree in French and Italian in 2011 and went on to study for an MSc in European Studies, in which she undertook a range of courses centred on inclusion and identity construction in Europe. During this time, she developed her interest in linguistic diversity and language policy, particularly in the context of allochthonous languages, which was the focus of her dissertation. After completing her MSc in 2013, she worked in the third sector, before returning to the University of Edinburgh in 2015 to begin her PhD.

Research summary

Róisín's PhD research is part of the Mobility and Inclusion in Multilingual Europe (MIME) project and examines provision for allochthonous language speakers within public services in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Her wider research interests include language policy (particularly with regard to allochthonous languages), societal attitudes towards multilingualism and the role of language in identity construction.
