Dr Matthew Weston is a Lecturer in Strength and Conditioning in the Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences. Matthew has 25 years combined experience of working as a practitioner in elite sport with university teaching and research positions. Applied positions include Head of Sports Science for the Professional Game Match Officials (England), Senior Football Researcher at the Aspire Academy (Qatar), and Director of Sports Science with the Professional Referee Organization (USA). Highlights of Matthew’s applied practice include sports scientist at the FIFA 2003 World Youth Championships (UAE) and the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup (Germany). Matthew’s previous University roles include Reader in Exercise Science at Teesside University and Researcher on a FIFA sponsored research project on expertise in soccer referees at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). He has been a British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist since 2000 and was awarded a BASES Fellowship in 2018.
