Thesis title: Data-led elections: the ethics of apps and algorithms in political campaigning

Background

Ellen is completing the Baillie Gifford PhD Studentship at the Edinburgh Futures Institute's Centre for Technomoral Futures. She received her MSc in Digital Society from the University of Edinburgh, where she was awarded the prize for best overall performance. Her thesis focused on the use of micro-targeted political advertising by Vote Leave during the Brexit campaign. She has additionally received a PGDip in Political Communication from the University of Glasgow and completed her undergraduate degree at the London School of Economics, receiving a BSc in Government and History. Ellen’s particular interest in the impact of data and technology in politics was sparked through her professional experience, having worked at the UK’s political regulator The Electoral Commission, as well as in local government.
