Background
I was appointed teaching fellow in Basque at the University of Edinburgh in 2023.
Prior to this, I completed a BA in Human Geography at the University of Durham and MSc in Society and Space at the University of Bristol. More recently, I have worked as an online Basque tutor and taught English at the British Council in Tbilisi, Georgia.
My research interests focus on the dynamic interface between the lived experiences of different minority languages and cultures and recent conceptual and theoretical developments in Geography, Environmental Sciences, Philosophy and Sociolinguistics. I am also interested in the pedagogical techniques and motivational psychology of language learning and have developed largely self-taught fluency in a range of languages, with particular focus on languages of non-Indo-European origin including Basque, Georgian and Mandarin Chinese.
Over the past six years I have carried out both quantitative and ethnographic research across the Basque country. My research won best dissertation award from the Rural Geography Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society and has been published in People and Nature, a journal for the British Ecological Society. Since 2017 I have been engaged in learning, teaching and promoting the Basque language and its dialects though various Basque media outlets, online platforms and cultural projects. This includes participation in and promotion of language-learning forums, such as Mintzanet, and Bertsolari improvised Basque singing collaborations. Between 2019 and 2022 I worked as a group leader on the annual Euskarabentura Expeditions designed to encourage and promote Basque language and culture among young people from the Northern and Southern Basque regions. I have lived in both Bizkaia and Zuberoa.
