Dr Noreen Dunnett (MSc, PhD)

Associate Tutor

Background

I am an associate researcher at the Centre for Research in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh and online tutor on the MSc in Digital Education and MSc Education programmes. Prior to gaining my doctorate in 2021, I worked as an independent digital education consultant across all levels of education from primary to higher education. I was a teacher of English and Communication Studies for 23 years, in secondary and tertiary education. Over the course of the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 - 2021, I gave advice on online/hybrid learning and technical support on Microsoft Teams to a small multi-academy trust in the Midlands, which comprises twelve primary schools.

My research interests focus on boredom, disengagement and sociomaterial practices in schools and digital games and how affective environments for learning are created.  Current projects include a planned book chapter in Teacher Identity and Teaching Practice Post-COVID edited by Dr Katy Marsh-Davies & Prof Cathy Burnett and a research monograph based on my thesis with the working title: Reimagining Boredom in Classrooms through Digital Game Spaces: Sociomaterial Perspectives, both to be published by Routledge, 2023-24.

I blog occasionally about sociomaterial approaches to classroom learning, digital games and engagement at Learning in the Digital Age
