Thesis title: The role of interferons in the risk of stroke and dementia

Background

Dr Rioux is a board-certified Canadian neurologist, fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC). He completed his undergraduate medical studies (2012-2017) and his neurology residency (2017-2022) at the University of Montreal (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), along with a master's degree in biomedical sciences (2019-2021) in the same institution. He has received several recognitions for his work on cancer-associated stroke, namely a travel scholarship from the American Academy of Neurology (2021 Futures in Neurologic Research), two oral presentation awards from the Quebec Neurologists Association, a scientific communication award from his biomedical sciences MSc/PhD student association, a publication award from his clinician investigator residency, and an academic excellence award from his MSc program. Dr Rioux was placed on the Dean’s Honour List of the Faculty of Medicine (University of Montreal) for his undergraduate and residency studies, and on the Rector’s Honour List of the same institution for his master's degree.

Research summary

Dr Rioux is enrolled in a clinical brain sciences PhD (co-supervisors: William Whiteley & David Hunt) since 2022 at the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences. He uses molecular epidemiology and genetics to investigate the role of interferons in the risk of cerebrovascular disease, including stroke and dementia.

Dr Rioux is supported by a clinical research scholarship from the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences of the University of Edinburgh (Rowling and Dr Hugh S P Binnie scholarship), a Doctoral Foreign Study Award from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR; 202210DFD-492007-93462), a joint clinician-investigator fellowship from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) and the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) du Québec, and a research scholarship from the Power Corporation of Canada Chair in Neurosciences of the University of Montreal.
