Degree Transfers - Continuing Students
The deadline to submit a degree transfer application to the School of PPLS is Friday, 16 September, 2022
There are strict deadlines governing degree transfers, and it is not possible to transfer mid-way through the academic year. Degree transfer applications are considered over the summer, after all results for the current academic year are available.
Students wishing to transfer into a programme owned by the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS) are advised to speak to a PPLS student support officer at an early stage. Transfers are not always straightforward, even for transfers between a combined honours degree and a related single honours degree programme.

Transfer requests are competitive. There is no guarantee that all requests will be granted due to limits on the overall number of places available for transfers and the particular student number constraints of subject areas.
Decisions are made by the PPLS senior Personal Tutor and are based on:
- Academic achievement at University
- Academic achievement prior to entry and/or programme entry thresholds
- Student's personal statement and motivation for changing programme
- Relevant special circumstances
Schools will normally only consider requests from students who have failed no more than 40 credits of study in their current year of study. Students who have failed, or are likely to fail, more than 40 credits of study in their current programme must talk to a member of their current home School’s Student Support Team about their options in the first instance.
No student transferring degree programme will be permitted more than one additional year of study.
Transfer into the first year of a degree programme Students accepted for transfer into a new degree programme, who are required to re-start in the first year of that programme, must satisfy the necessary academic criteria, and meet the offer threshold for entry to the programme in the forthcoming session. (New first-year students who want to transfer degree within the first two weeks of semester 1 should contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office.)
Transfer into subsequent years of a degree programme Students who wish to transfer into year 2 or above of a degree programme usually must meet the criteria as set out in the Degree Programme Table for the degree they wish to join.

Fees and Funding
Any change to degree programme may have implications for fees, funding or visas. Tier 4/Student visa holders Please note a programme transfer may affect the validity of your Tier 4 or Student visa. By submitting this form, you agree to seek timely advice from the Student Immigration Service (studentimmigration@ed.ac.uk) and to follow any recommended course of action.
Degree transfer applications open in semester 2. Applications will be considered in the summer once all exams are finished and final results are available. If you have resits in August, then your application may not be considered until these have been completed and final results are available.
Please note that transfer requests are considered individually and this can take some time. We aim to inform students of the outcome of their requests by the beginning of August, but this may not be possible depending on staff availability and the volume of requests received.
You are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible, but we will consider applications submitted up until the end of Welcome Week 2022 i.e. Friday 16 September, 2022. This is a strict deadline and no applications received after this will be considered. Please note that other Schools may have an earlier deadline.
You will be informed of the outcome of your request via a note on your Euclid record. Please check your University email regularly as this is how we will contact you with any queries about your transfer request.
Choosing courses for next academic year: We advise that you submit your course choices based on the degree you are applying to transfer into. There is a space on the PPLS course choice form for students to inform the Teaching Office of any other important information -- please note here that you are applying to transfer degrees, and include back-up course choices based on your current degree programme.
