Title: Speech Acts and Speaking Up
Abstract: When we encounter speech that we judge to inappropriately denigrate others, we often want to—or feel that we ought to—counter it with speech of our own. I’ll call this response “speaking up.” Some people speak up more easily than others, but whether we speak up or not, is also common to have doubts about the value and effectiveness of speaking up. This lecture will expand on a model of subordinating speech that has been taking shape in the literature, and use it to explore the effectiveness and value of speaking up.
