Title: What do you get if you add many babies to philosophy?

Abstract: ManyBabies is a large-scale collaboration of psychology labs across the world, with the purpose of running replications of key developmental psychology studies. The ManyBabies II project examines claims surrounding false-belief understanding in infancy. Philosophers and psychologists have long been interested in when the concept of false-belief develops, with some arguing it is as early as 15 months (Carruthers, 2013; Baillargeon, Scott, & Bian, 2016) and others suggesting it does not appear until 3.5 – 4 yrs (Low, Apperly, Butterfill, & Rakoczy, 2016). This talk discusses some of the results of ManyBabies II and how they affect contemporary philosophical theories of false-belief development, and the wider implications of replication work for philosophers of mind.

We are a group of researchers from diverse backgrounds in the above-mentioned groups (and beyond) who aim to gain an interdisciplinary yet deep understanding of the threads that bind the human mind and the world. In particular, this seminar series focuses on the nature of cognition, metacognition and social cognition. We’ll be tackling questions such as, what does it mean to think? What does it mean to think about thinking? And, what does it mean to think about one’s own thinking versus thinking about the thinking of other people? Please come along!
