University awards honorary degree to former Philosophy PhD student & lecturer

Sarah Jean Brodie has been awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Edinburgh

The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences is pleased to announce that distinguished philosopher and former PhD student and lecturer Professor Sarah Jean Broadie will be awarded a Doctor of Letters from the University on Friday 26 June 2020.

We are delighted that Professor Broadie has been awarded a Doctor of Letters. Her exemplary contributions in philosophy continue to positively impact and inspire our community here at Edinburgh. We look forward to honouring her achievement at our upcoming graduation ceremony.

Classical philosophy specialist

Sarah is a Professor of Moral Philosophy and Bishop Wardlaw Professor at the University of St Andrews. She has made major contributions in philosophy, specialising in ancient philosophy, metaphysics and moral philosophy.

Honours and fellowships

Sarah has achieved several honours throughout her academic career. In 1990 she was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. She is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, British Academy and Academia Europea.

In 2003 she was invited to give the Nellie Wallace Lectures at the University of Oxford. Her series was entitled, ‘Nature and Divinity in the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle.’

In addition to being an Honorary Fellow of Somerville College at Oxford University, she was appointed OBE [Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire] for services to classical philosophy in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Previous professorships

After completing her PhD, Sarah joined the School’s philosophy department as a lecturer in 1968. Along with her current post at St. Andrews, she has held professorships at the University of Texas at Austin, Yale University, Rutgers University of New Jersey, and Princeton University.
