Edinburgh undergraduate linguistics conference is a huge success

Students from the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences organised the sell-out 2018 conference for the Undergraduate Linguistics Association of Britain (ULAB)

Well done to our linguistics students who organised the fully booked 2018 ULAB conference here at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School on 9  11 April.

Community of budding linguists

10 students organised the conference, which welcomed over 120 attendees from 24 institutions across the world.

From psycholinguistics to morphology and syntax, a wide variety of research was presented by students in talks and poster sessions across the three-day conference.

ULAB 2018 programme

Helping to organise ULAB 2018 has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had at University. I was able to meet new people and organise a space where linguists from across the world were able to connect and discuss their linguistic interests. The teamwork demonstrated within the Organising Committee itself demonstrates the skills and collaborative environment that PPLS students learn throughout University. During the three days, 45 students presented oral presentations and 15 students presented posters on their undergraduate research. 30 linguistics books donated from 5 publishers were won in a free book raffle. Additionally, we organised a number of socials, including a ceilidh and a walk up Arthur’s Seat, allowing students to meet each other in a more relaxed environment and to explore Edinburgh. I am incredibly grateful to PPLS staff for their support and encouragement that helped ULAB 2018 be a success.

ULAB gets better and better every year, and it’s no coincidence that this year it was held at the University of Edinburgh. The organisation was impeccable and it was obvious that the money they had received from their sponsors was put to good use. Any other university would dream of having the student involvement that Edinburgh Linguistics students have!

ULAB

Founded in 2011 by the University's Linguistics and English Language Society, ULAB is the only independent UK society set up for undergraduate linguistics students that is not tied to another professional organisation or university.
