The award was founded in 2000 as a senior career award to honour a researcher for accomplishment in personality psychology. This award recognises rigorous research over the span of the recipient’s career, rather than one specific discovery or publication.

Originally named the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) Personality Researcher Award it was later renamed for Jack Block, a psychology professor at UC-Berkeley, who was a pioneer in the theoretical and empirical study of personality and the first recipient of the award.

The SPSP is the world’s largest organisation of social and personality psychologists. With over 7,500 members, SPSP strives to advance the science, teaching, and application of social and personality psychology.

“It's especially an honour to receive this award because it's intended for someone whose contribution to the field is of the sorts that Jack Block's was: deep rather than for any one particular work. This has always been my aspiration in entering this field, and to think I might have gotten anywhere near his level sure motivates me further to keep going.” Professor Wendy Johnson

Wendy will be honoured at the SPSP’s 2023 convention in Atlanta.
