Linguistics Professor to deliver webinar talk at United Nations Association of New York

Antonella Sorace, Linguistics Professor and Director of Bilingualism Matters, will speak at a webinar hosted by the United Nations Association of New York

On Wednesday, 3 June 2020, Professor of Developmental Linguistics Antonella Sorace will present at WebTalkUNA, a new webinar series hosted by the United Nations Association of New York (UNA-NY).

I’m honoured to have the opportunity to speak to the UNA-NY: given their commitment to human rights, democracy and sustainable development, this is an ideal way to reach people who will support initiatives promoting multilingualism in any language.

Multilingualism and international relations

In her webinar presentation “Investing in Languages: Why Multilingualism Matters,” Antonella will delve into some of the main misconceptions and facts about multilingualism over the lifespan, focusing on current research on indigenous minority languages and demonstrating the importance of:

  • Building firm community foundations for inter-generational language transmission
  • Enabling informed decisions about minority languages
  • Establishing a vital connection between language policy and speakers

When asked about one thing she hopes attendees will take away from her talk, Antonella replied, “The idea that linguistic and cultural diversity is one of humanity's most valuable possessions, and that it’s worth investing in multilingualism both for individuals and for societies.”

How to register

Antonella’s webinar talk will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM EST (5:00 PM to 6:00 PM BST) on Wednesday, 3 June 2020. Joining the webinar is free.
