Athena SWAN Bronze Award

The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences has achieved its first Athena SWAN Bronze award for supporting gender equality.

Athena SWAN Bronze Award

The School of PPLS is fully committed to recognising and supporting equality and diversity amongst its staff and students. This month we were awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze award by the Equality Challenge Unit’s Athena SWAN charter in recognition of our efforts to promote a School culture of gender equality.

Athena SWAN Charter

The Athena SWAN Charter formed in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine.

In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.

Building on the success of Psychology

Our Psychology department achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2013 and the School has built on the progress made in Psychology to address gender equality at the School level.

The new PPLS Equality and Diversity Director, Dr Michelle Luciano, will be leading on the implementation of the School’s Athena SWAN action plan.

The action plan will be facilitated and coordinated through the PPLS Equality and Diversity Committee, with activities starting over the coming months.

Dr Michelle Luciano

I am extremely proud of the actions that we, as a School, devised to tackle issues of gender equality. From making job roles and promotion processes more transparent to promoting mentoring opportunities for staff and students, not only do we foster the career progression of women but we also build an environment which is fairer to all.
