Title: Could Language Development Look Different in Different Cultures?
Abstract: I will address this question with findings from a longitudinal study of the English and Spanish language development of U.S.-born children from Spanish-speaking families. The findings pertain to three topics: (1) cultural differences in mother-child conversation, (2) the receptive-expressive gap in bilingual language proficiency, and (3) the roles of language exposure and language use in language development. Together, findings in these areas suggest one way in which language development might follow different courses in different cultures.
