Title: Grammatical processing and syntactic change: infinitival complements in German
Abstract: The talk presents work from the Collaborative Research Centre started last year (https://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/sfb1287/index.html). The subproject "Grammatical processing and syntactic change" explores the dimensions of syntactic variability from a diachronic perspective. It combines corpus study and psycholinguistic experimentation to investigate how language processing strategies might affect speakers' choices of particular syntactic variants. The extraordinary abundance of syntactic variants in Early New High German, which gradually became more constrained during the emergence of present-day Standard German, provides the empirical basis for this work. The project focuses specifically on the emergence of coherent infinitival structures.
