Title: Language Ideology and Inequality in Education Policy: Language Ideology and beliefs amongst North Koreans Living in South Korea
Abstract: Why do certain languages become more desirable than others? Insufficient understanding of language and society in language policy management is one proposed cause. Educational settings are a nexus of diverse agencies in language policy implementation. This research will investigate divergence of language ideologies and related social variables amongst policymakers, educators, and learners, thereby facilitating measurement of language policy impact and uncovering everyday experiences of linguistic discrimination and inequality. Qualitative research, including an critical ethnographic study of North Korean community, will apply Spolsky's tripartite language policy model leading to thematic analysis of interviews, participant observations, and primary resources.
