Complete a year of your studies in another country
Students in the department have a number of opportunities to study abroad, and all of our exchanges are with internationally renowned and excellent universities. The normal time to go abroad is during your 3rd year, and students typically go abroad for a full academic year, to get the full experience of living abroad.
A series of 'Year Abroad Meetings' are organised in the middle of semester 1 of your second year to discuss opportunities for going abroad. Here is the material that is discussed at these meetings.
A series of meetings are also organised towards the end of semester 2 for those who have a firm place to spend their third year abroad. Here is the material that is discussed at these meetings:
- information for those who need to write a Third-Year Project while abroad is available here
- information for those who will be studying courses that count for Linguistics or English Language while abroad is available here
Degrees combining a Modern Foreign Language with Linguistics or English Language
Students taking a joint degree in a Modern Foreign Language and Linguistics or English Language are normally required to spend their 3rd year abroad as part of their degree. Many of you will be going away on exchanges organised by your Language Department, or to do other things while abroad. However, LEL may be able to offer you a place at one of the universities listed on the LEL Erasmus Exchange Scheme page if it would be appropriate for you, and this may be more easy to arrange than it is to go through your Foreign Language Department. You can contact the LEL International Coordinator to discuss this and the academic work that you will need to do for Linguistics or English Language while abroad. Everyone going abroad for their third year must contact the LEL International Coordinator to check that the arrangements are in line with the requirements of the English Language or Linguistics side of your degree.
Other degrees involving Linguistics or English Language
Students taking a SIngle Honours degree involving Linguistics or English Language can still study abroad for a year by taking part in one of the university's optional exchange schemes, as described below - click on the links to the 'Erasmus exchange scheme' or 'International exchange programme' to find out more. If you are interested in this, you need to start getting information and planning in the first semester of your 2nd year. There may be opportunities to go abroad if you are taking Linguistics or English Language combined with another subject (i.e. not a language) at Honours. You will need to consult with both LEL and you other subject to discuss this.
LEL International Coordinator is Patrick Honeybone.
