We hold theses presented for most higher degrees at the University of Edinburgh. Use this page to understand the different ways of locating theses of interest to you.
In 2016 the library began a three year project to digitise approximately 15,000 PhD theses and make them accessible through ERA, the University's research archive. By the end of 2018 every University of Edinburgh thesis will be on ERA in a digital format. Further information can be found on the project webpage and the University's alumni news article.
Please contact the CRC to see if this item has already been scanned but not yet uploaded. In this instance we can provide a copy free of charge. If the thesis has not been scanned, we can provide an on-demand pdf for a charge of £40 + VAT where applicable. There is a 20% discount for UoE staff, students and alumni.
Some theses on ERA are restricted as they contain commercially sensitive research or are pending publication. In these instances it may be possible to consult the physical copy at the CRC. Please contact the CRC to enquire about this.
Theses can only be consulted at the holding library (e.g. the CRC). Theses at the CRC may not be taken out on loan and they are not available as Inter-Library Loans.
Where a thesis record shows ‘RESTRICTED’, consultation is prohibited unless the enquirer obtains written permission from the author, which must then be counter-signed by the author’s head of department. An author can restrict a thesis for a period not exceeding 5 years after graduation.
Theses may not be photographed or photocopied by users.
If you are consulting a thesis at the CRC, staff can photocopy up to 20 pages. Please note a fee applies.
