Nationals of certain countries who come to live in the UK for more than six months need to register with the police.
If you need to register with the police it will normally say so on your visa or Biometric Residence Permit.
You can find out if your country is on the Police Registration list by checking Appendix 2 of the Immigration Rules.
From September to November 2017, you will not be able to register at the Police Headquarters in Fettes. You must book an appointment to register on campus.
You will need:
In September and October the police will visit the University Campus to register new students who have just arrived in the UK.
To book an appointment, please visit our booking tool:
Once there, select the appointment option for ‘Police Registration’. You will be able to book an appointment from Monday 11th September.
Please note that it is very important you attend the appointment time you have selected. Appointments are limited and police time is valuable. If you do not attend and register at an appointment on campus during September or October, you may be liable to a fine of up to £5,000.
Appointments are only for new students who are required to register for the first time. If you already have a Police Registration Certificate, you must go to a local police station to update this, the police will not be able to help you on campus.
If you need to register with the Police later in the academic year, you will need to visit the Police headquarters at Fettes Avenue, Edinburgh, EH4 1RB. Opening times are Monday to Friday 09:00 to 12:30. Appointments are not necessary.
To find out how to get to the Police headquarters you should refer to the Lothian Buses journey planner.
Once you have obtained your Police Registration Certificate, you are required to keep this updated every time you change your address or immigration permission.
You can update your certificate at any local police station.
