The University and Europe

EU Settlement Scheme

The University is providing support to help you register your right to live and work in the UK post-Brexit.

The UK Government has confirmed that the EU Settlement Scheme will be fully open by 31 March 2019, with an online application process that is meant to be simple and quick. If you are an EU citizen (or a direct family member) with a valid biometric passport, you and your family will be able to apply for either settled or pre-settled status, with a deadline for applications of 30 June 2021. It will also be open to non-EU family members who have a valid biometric residence card.

The UK Government has announced a further pilot of the EU Settlement Scheme that is open to eligible staff and students at the University of Edinburgh. This phase is intended to fully test the online application system and enable any necessary improvements to be made ahead of full roll-out in late March 2019. Eligible staff and students will be able to apply from Monday 21 January 2019, and should already have received information directly from the University.

On Monday 21 January 2019, the UK Government announced that it will waive the £65 application fee (£32.50 for children under 16) for pre-settled/settled status when the Scheme is fully rolled out in March. Those who apply during the test phases will, in due course, have their fee reimbursed directly by the Home Office.
