History

The election marks 150 years since William Gladstone first took up post of Rector at the University.

The role was established by an 1858 Act of Parliament. The Rector chairs the University Court, the Governing body of the University, and is elected every three years.

The Rector to be elected will be the 50th person to hold the post. The current Rector is former Green MSP Mark Ballard.
