Launching new business ideas

The University is to host a series of events to promote staff and student entrepreneurship.

The events, which include a £1,000 competition to pitch new business ideas, will encourage enterprising staff and students to come up with new ways of turning their ideas into commercial realities.

The campaign is part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012, a movement that seeks to encourage people around the world to create new opportunities and successful ventures.

The events at Edinburgh are supported by the Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE), LAUNCH.ed - the University’s free service for student entrepreneurs - and the University’s Entrepreneurship Club.

They take place from Nov 12-18, and many are also available to the public. For more details see:

We’re really excited to put on such a diverse programme and to highlight some of the incredible accomplishments of our student entrepreneurs. Our aim is to make people more aware of what’s possible, and a great way to do that is to show them what their colleagues and peers are already doing.

Week highlights

Highlights of the programme include:

  • Startup Weekend – a 54-hour event where attendees pitch, prototype, and launch a new web or mobile business
  • Startup Summit – a full-day conference organised by a LAUNCH.ed client for other young entrepreneurs
  • Pitching for Management – an invite-only event for staff spin-out projects to pitch to a room of potential mentors and advisers
  • Santander Pitching Competition – student entrepreneurs deliver live pitches for the chance to win £1000 for their business
  • Young Entrepreneurs’ Panel, featuring Gareth Williams, CEO of Skyscanner, as well as several student entrepreneurs
  • Turn Your Idea Into a Great Opportunity – a taster session for the LAUNCH.ed Startup Bootcamp, which helps students take their early-stage idea from a concept to an elevator pitch in two days


The University of Edinburgh is one of the leading institutions in the UK at encouraging student entrepreneurship.

Since its inception in 2005, LAUNCH.ed has helped Edinburgh students start more than 120 businesses, including EoSurgical, an award-winning company that designs and manufactures training tools for surgeons to improve their operative skills.

LAUNCH.ed was also recognised in 2011 as the leading higher education innovation programme of the year.

According to independent consultancy BiGGAR Economics, the University’s commercialisation activities - including the work of Edinburgh Research and Innovation, the University’s commercial arm - contribute more than £140 million to the Scottish economy per year.
