Former PM to speak at memorial lecture

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown will deliver a speech at the official opening of the University’s renamed Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre.

Mr Brown will pay tribute to Mr Aikman’s lifelong principles of fairness, social justice and the need to address poverty and inequality.

Mr Aikman was a political campaigner and, like Mr Brown, hailed from Kirkcaldy.

He died from Motor Neuron Disease in February 2017 following a brave battle. He was aged 31.

The Business School graduate had raised more than £500,000 for research funding.

In 2015, Mr Aikman received an honorary doctorate from the University and a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours.

The move to rename the lecture theatre in honour of this inspiring campaigner was proposed by the University’s student body.
