Rwanada soccer stars shine at Peffermill

The University Football Club will play host to the Rwandan national football team this Saturday.

Edinburgh’s footballers will take on the visitors in a friendly which kicks off at 3 pm.

The game takes place at the University’s recently upgraded Peffermill sports ground.

The ground can be accessed via the turnstile from Peffermill Road and entry will cost £X.

'The Wasps'

The Rwandan squad, known as The Wasps, are in Scotland for a two week-long training camp from the 2-16 August. They will then begin their African Nations Cup qualifying campaign later this year. The Rwanda national football team was founded in 1972. Their biggest success to date has been qualifying for the African Cup of Nations in 2004.

Rwanda recently appointed 29-year-old Northern Irishman Johnny McKinstry as their head coach. The team currently sits 78th in the FIFA World rankings.

The squad consists of players from the Rwandan, Tanzanian and Kenyan national leagues.

The visit has been planned in conjunction with the Scottish Football Association and the Rwanda Scotland Alliance.

East Peffermill Sports Ground

Peffermill’s upgraded facilities were officially opened last month. They will provide the University Football team with a modern football environment, which complies with Scottish Football Associations’ entry-level standards.

The facility includes floodlights, perimeter fencing, team technical-areas, an access control turnstile and the 100 seat Alan Chainey Stand, named in honour of the University’s former Director of Sport.
