Podcast discusses independence plan

On 26 November the Scottish Government published the White Paper, describing it as “the most comprehensive blueprint for an independent country ever published".

The latest Big Idea podcast looks at the 670 page document, asking if it is a triumph of “wishful thinking over reason” as its critics claim, or is it a genuine roadmap to a more democratic, more just, and more prosperous nation.

Independence experts

The academics on this month’s podcast are:

  • Professor Charlie Jeffery, Director of the Academy of Government
  • Professor Sheila Riddell, Director of the Centre for Research in Education Inclusion and Diversity
  • Dr Nicola McEwen, Associate Director of the Scottish Centre on Constitutional Change

All three guests are involved in the Economic Social and Research Council’s project, The Future of the UK and Scotland, which brings together the country’s best social scientists to investigate Scotland’s constitutional future and its implications for the rest of the UK.

The Big Idea

The Big Idea Podcast is a monthly show featuring academics debating contemporary issues and showcasing their research and expertise.

Previous shows have looked at our relationship with technology, explored the dark side of Halloween, and unpicked ideas of self perception.

As well as being an accessible way for the public to hear about the University’s work, the Big Idea is also a forum for academics to meet colleagues from different parts of the institution, share ideas, and gain media training in a studio setting.
