On Thursday 20th September the MRC Human Genetics Unit hosted a conference on the mechanisms that establish, maintain and perturb the stability of the genome and epigenome, and the disease states that can arise from defects in these processes. The meeting was organized in association with a Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) on Chromatin Dynamics in Development and Disease (Chromatin3D), co-ordinated by Babis Spilianakis (Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, FORTH, Crete). This was the final annual meeting of this network and over three days in Edinburgh the students in the network, from across Europe, discussed their own research and training in intellectual property, business and entrepreneurship culminating in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style team presentation. On the second day they joined other scientists to listen to international experts in the field of epigenetics and chromatin dynamics. A highlight was the keynote lecture from Nada Jabado (McGill University, Montreal) who captivated the audience by explaining the exciting journey that led her to the identification and investigation of histone gene mutations in paediatric brain tumours.
