Outstanding candidates are being invited to join an MRC funded 4-year multi-disciplinary PhD programme in Human Genetics, Genomics and Disease at the MRC Human Genetics Unit (HGU), within the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM) at the University of Edinburgh.

The MRC HGU PhD Programme harnesses strengths in the latest computational and experimental technologies to investigate how our genomes work to control the function of molecules, cells and tissues in people and populations. Over 30 principal investigators contribute to this cross-disciplinary programme, spanning from fundamental science to translational research.

Research projects benefit from state of the art facilities for genomics, mass spectrometry, advanced microscopy, single cell technologies, as well as advanced computational and informatics capabilities. For students interested in bioinformatics, the programme also provides a strong focus on computational biology and statistical genetics.

Students are sought with biology, biomedical or bioinformatics related backgrounds and additionally, applications are welcome from students from the physical, computational or mathematical sciences.

The MRC HGU is committed to high quality training, mentorship and research excellence to prepare the next generation of scientists to tackle the most challenging questions underpinning health and disease. This training will enable successful applicants to think critically, undertake mechanistic research and to make new discoveries. In the first six months, these PhD students will receive structured, taught training covering core knowledge areas relevant to the MRC HGU’s scientific themes, combined with tutorials to equip students with the expertise required to be a successful scientist. This is combined with three short rotation projects to enable students to explore new research areas and build collaborations before selecting their own research direction from 18 research project options and spending the remaining 3½ years completing and writing up their PhD research.

8 studentships are available to start in September 2018 with a stipend of £17,500 p/a. Applicants should hold at least an upper second-class degree in a relevant subject and comply with English language requirements. To receive full funding students must be UK or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to commencement. The application closing date is Friday 12th January 2018 and interviews will be held on Tuesday 13th February 2018.
