Edinburgh Super Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC) PhD Tooba Quidwai visit

1st year Edinburgh Super Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC) student, Tooba Quidwai, attended the Quantitative Imaging: from Cells to Molecules course in the Cold spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), New York. CSHL is a private non-profit organisation with research programs focused on cancer, neuroscience and genomics.

Tooba came to Edinburgh Super Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC) from Dr. Jonas Ries' lab at the EMBL where she worked with state-of-the-art imaging techniques, the use of super-resolution microscopy continues into her PhD where she will be applying these techniques to study Cilia and Ciliapathies. Cilia are small microtubule-based “organelles” found on almost every mammalian cell with critical signalling and sensory roles in development and disease. Cilia are tiny structures (~200nm in diameter and ~2microns in length) with thousands of proteins clustered in a small space, making super-resolution the ideal approach to better understand the biological processes.
