Professor Wendy Bickmore, Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit, hosted the second annual ESRIC Super-Resolution Summer School last week, welcoming 35 International attendees and highlighting the state-of-the-art microscopy technologies and expertise present in Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Super-Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC) - of which Professor Bickmoreis University of Edinburgh lead - is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative partnership between the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh (IGMM, which includes the MRC Human Genetics Unit) and the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering (IB3) at Heriot-Watt University. The consortium aims to develop and advance microscopy techniques used to study cell function and human disease. The summer school brought together leading academics and suppliers in the field of super-resolution microscopy to provide expertise and guidance to the attendees, with a varied programme - including seminar discussions, hands-on workshops and social events - successfully highlighting the theory behind different approaches, their benefits and limitations and how they can be applied to individual research projects.
