Professor Bickmore elected as next President of The Genetics Society

The Head of the Chromosomes and Gene Expression Section of the MRC Human Genetics Unit at the IGMM, has been elected as the next President of The Genetics Society: May 2014

Professor Wendy Bickmore, Head of the Chromosomes and Gene Expression Section of the MRC Human Genetics Unit at the IGMM, has been elected as the next President of The Genetics Society.

The Genetics Society is one of the oldest learned societies devoted to genetics in the world and was founded almost 100 years ago by William Bateson. It promotes the public understanding of genetics, organizes scientific meetings, supports students to attend meetings and sponsors summer studentships that enable undergraduates to gain valuable hands-on practical experience in labs.

It is an enormous honour to be elected as President of such an august organization and to follow in the footsteps of past Presidents who have done so much to promote different aspects of the field of genetics. At a time where there is increasing public awareness of human genetics, genome variation, epigenetics, and genomic medicine, I hope that the expertise of my colleagues at the IGMM will particularly help me to make the most of my presidency.

Professor Nick Hastie, Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit and the IGMM congratulates Wendy, “This is a great honour and Wendy joins a remarkable list of past Presidents including JBS Haldane, CH Waddington, Charlotte Auerbach, Paul Nurse, Brian Charlesworth and our own Veronica van Heyningen. This continues an impressive tradition of Presidents with an Edinburgh Connection.”
